Monkombu Sambsivan Swaminathan was born on 7 August 1925 at Kumbhakonam in Tamil Nadu. His father was a nationalist doctor. Swaminathan had his basic education in Tamilnadu. The he went to Britain and took PhD from the 🏫 school of Agricultural in Cambridge in 1952. He dedicated himself completely to agriculture. He spent all his time doing research on various crops and in basic and applied genetics. Also he developed high yielding strains of wheat and rice.
He was appointed the director of Indian Agricultural cetre of the Agricultural ministry. Earlier he had worked with an international rice institute. Once he felt that Nobel laureate N.E. Borlaug’s newly developed Mexican dwarf wheat variety could solve the wheat problem. Borlaug visited India and provided a range of Mexican dwarf wheat varieties. Swaminathan has received innumerable awards. In 1973 he was made the fellow of the Royal society. Many universities have honoured him with doctorates. He is recipient of both Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. He was awarded the Magasaysay award, Birbal. Sahni award and Mendal award and many others. Because of his concerted efforts, India’s food problems were resolved, in 1999; time magazine voted him one of the twenty most influential Asians of the 20th century. He accomplished difficult crosses in potato 🥔 and jute species. His immense contribution for the development of the rural sector in unique.
